What is PRP?
PRP stands for Psychiatric Rehabilitation Program. According to the Maryland Department of Behavioral Health, "Psychiatric Rehabilitation services facilitate the individual’s recovery and develop or restore an individual’s independent living and social skills, including the individual’s ability to make decisions regarding self-care, management of illness, life, work, and community participation; and promote the use of resources to integrate the individual into the community."
Is PRP the same as therapy?
No. PRP services work in conjunction with therapy. While therapy focuses on therapeutic processes and techniques to help the client recover and/or cope with the effects of their mental illness, PRP services focus on activities, interventions, and community resources to help the client function independently despite having a mental illness. PRP services are considered only when medication and therapy are not sufficient enough to support the client in an outpatient setting. PRP is considered a step up (more intensive) from therapy and a step down (less intensive) from inpatient treatment.
How do I know if I meet medical necessity for PRP?
Please contact our office and speak to our Rehabilitation Specialist to ask more questions about medical necessity for PRP services.
Must a referral come through my therapist?
A referral for PRP services may come through any licensed mental health provider with whom you have ongoing outpatient treatment.
Special situations exist where an individual may qualify for PRP services if found not competent to stand trial or if an individual was in a Maryland state mental health facility for more than 3 months and requires Residential Rehabilitation Program (RRP) services upon discharge.
How does it work? What should I expect?
- ***Services are initiated with a referral from your treating provider***
- You will then be contacted and scheduled for a functional assessment.
- At the time of the assessment, you will provide consent to treatment and complete other necessary forms, screenings, and documentation.
- If approved for services, you will receive an approval letter/welcome package and be assigned to a PRP counselor.
- You will work with your PRP counselor to identify and formulate treatment goals and to collaboratively work on accomplishing set goals.
-
Children and adolescents will have a minimum of 3 visits per month with their PRP counselor.
-
Adults will have a minimum of 6 visits per month with their PRP counselor.
Do I have to come to the office?
Our PRP services are both onsite and offsite. Your PRP counselor will meet you in your home or in the community. But there are groups and other services that are only available onsite. Currently, Telehealth is available for some services.
